Edgar Allan Poe

More than 150 years after his death, Edgar Allan Poe, will finally receive a proper funeral — two, in fact.

Baltimore is planning two ceremonial burials for Poe, the author and postmodern fashion plate, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of his birth, The Associated Press reported. The events offer more than just a good afternoon’s entertainment for goths: they are meant to make up for the fact that when Poe died in 1849, his funeral was attended by fewer than 10 people. (His cousin Neilson Poe never publicly announced his death.)

To accommodate the expected turnout of hundreds of people, two funerals will be held on Sunday at Westminster Hall, the former church near his burial site in Westminster graveyard. Those events will be preceded on Wednesday by a public viewing of an effigy of Poe’s body, and on Thursday by an all-night vigil at the Poe Monument in Westminster graveyard.
