Is now really the time to bring back Scream? The circumstances of the first film, originally titled Scary Movie were unique. Written by Kevin Williamson as a dark satire of the genre that also functioned as a horror film, it was the property that put Miramax’s genre division, Dimension, on the map even after quarreling with Wes Craven, one of the creators of modern horror cinema.
However, no potential box-office resurrection will remain buried these days, so why not re-start the franchise. Yes, Scream 4 is supposed to be the beginnings of a new trilogy, because that sounds like a profitable idea to someone, somewhere.
Right now, the idea mostly exists in the mind of Kevin Williamson, who is back to write the fourth installment. It is Williamson that is saying this will be a new trilogy based off Courtney Cox’s Gale Weather’s character and Wiliamson that has occasionally teased that “there may be another one” when asked if the Scream 4 killer will wear the same “Ghostface” mask. I don’t know if that means that there will be a second killer or a different mask, but it’s way too early to be speculating.
At least, that’s what Cox seems to be saying about at second trilogy.
“She [Gale Weathers] has a kid now,” Cox said in a group interview Saturday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour in Pasadena, Calif., where she was promoting her ABC show Cougar Town. “She’s married to Dewey.”
Scream 3 ended with Deputy Dewey (David Arquette, Cox’s real-life husband) proposing to local newswoman-turned-true-crime guru Gale. The characters bonded during their investigation of the first Scream murders, through the campus crimes of Scream 2 and the film-within-the-film of Scream 3.
Williamson previously described Scream 4 as the beginning of a new trilogy. Cox has no trepidations about beginning another three films. “No, because [I take things] one day at a time,” she said. “But I heard the idea for Scream 4, and it’s fantastic.”
“Fantastic,” says Courtney Cox of the mediocre Cougar Town and the now cancelled Dirt. “Fantastic” says Courtney Cox, who returns with her husband to the franchise that made him famous and made her feel better about not being on Friends anymore.
