Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow

By Fred Topel – SciFiWire.com

Jerry Bruckheimer is developing a new movie based on The Lone Ranger, the popular western hero from radio plays and movie serials, and Johnny Depp is attached to play the Native American sidekick, Tonto.

Bruckheimer said to expect Depp to do for Tonto what he did with Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.

“[Pirates writers Ted] Elliot and [Terry] Rossio worked on that also with some other writers and with Johnny [Depp],” Bruckheimer said in a group interview last week in Santa Monica, Calif. “So they’re creating something that has a kind of true-to-the-western [feel], but adding other additional elements like we did with Pirates so it won’t be just a straight-ahead western.”

Depp’s choice to play the Native American sidekick fits the actor’s quirky tastes. Bruckheimer has his work cut out for him finding a lead who can make a good Ranger to a superstar Tonto.
“We’re still creating a pretty wide net and figuring it out,” Bruckheimer said. “It comes down to who is available when we want to make it. We have a wish list.”
The Lone Ranger is in development for a tentative 2012 release date.

Guillermo del Toro will take Disney on a scary ride

Posted by GoreMaster Special Effects on September 11, 2009

Guillermo del Toro with a Hell Boy hand

Guillermo del Toro with a Hell Boy hand

Dawn C. Chmielewski and Geoff Boucher – LATimes.com

Walt Disney Studios and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro are forming a production company, Disney Double Dare You, to create animated films with a spooky edge.

Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook announced the partnership today in a star-studded presentation to the D23 Expo fan convention that brought actors Johnny Depp, Nicolas Cage and John Travolta, and directors Tim Burton and Robert Zemeckis, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and singer-actress Miley Cyrus onstage in a packed auditorium at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Del Toro, who is in New Zealand doing pre-production on the film “The Hobbit,”  delivered a recorded presentation in which he said he hopes to create animated films in the chilling but family-friendly spirit of one of his favorite Disney theme park attractions, the Haunted Mansion. The filmmaker waxed on about the “immersive” journey to another world that he experienced when four decades ago he stepped into the mansion, which to his young mind was “the most demanded real estate in the whole world.”

The first project is called “The Troll Hunters.” The filmmaker also said there will be a shared trait among all the Double Dare projects, which will include books, merchandise and films, but he kept that secret to himself on this day.

“I love to take audiences into fantastic new world and provide them with some anxious moments in the process,” Del Toro said. “It is part of the Disney canon to create thrilling, unforgettable moments in the process. It is part of the Disney canon to create thrilling, unforgettable moments and villains in all their classic films. It is my privilege for Double Dare You to continue in this tradition.”

It is unclear how many films the acclaimed director of “Pan’s Labyrinth” and the comic-book-inspired “Hellboy” is committing to make under the partnership with Disney — or when he’ll find the time. He is directing two “Hobbit” films for Warner Bros./New Line Cinema and MGM, which are scheduled for release in 2011 and 2012, and has been linked to half a dozen other projects, including “Drood” and a “Frankenstein” remake.

Movie Bosses End Batman Casting Rumors

Posted by GoreMaster Special Effects on August 27, 2009

Batman

Hollywood bosses have stepped in to silence speculation about the next BATMAN movie – insisting there isn’t even a script yet for the superhero sequel.
Rumours about the planned follow-up to The Dark Knight have been plentiful ever since the blockbuster hit cinemas in 2008.
Internet gossip sites have been rife with reports about the possible addition of feline femme fatale Catwoman to the next picture in Christopher Nolan’s film franchise, with a British tabloid reporting over the weekend (22-23Aug) that Megan Fox is in negotiations to take the coveted role.
Angelina Jolie, Cher and Kate Beckinsale have also been linked to the part, while Shia LaBeouf, Johnny Depp and Eddie Murphy have also been in rumoured negotiations concerning the picture.
Movie chiefs have confirmed they do want to shoot another Batman movie, but they are adamant the project is in the very early stages and producers haven’t even discussed casting yet.
A representative for the Warner Bros. film studio tells People.com, “It’s rumour. It’s not true. There is no script. There is no project to be cast in.”

Johnny Depp tackles vampires

Posted by GoreMaster Special Effects on August 18, 2009

Johnny DeppFrom World Entertainment News Network

Johnny Depp is bidding to take his favorite childhood TV show, vampire thriller Dark Shadows, to the big screen.

Depp and regular collaborator, director Tim Burton, hope to turn the ’60s series – about a man struck down with a vampire curse – into a movie franchise.

The actor says, “I was obsessed with (lead character) Barnabas Collins. I have photographs of me holding Barnabas Collins’ posters when I was five or six.”

And Burton – who worked with Depp on movies Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – admits work is already under way.

The director reveals, “That’s the plan. There was something very weird about (Dark Shadows), it had the weirdest vibe to it. I’m sort of intrigued about that vibe. It’s early days on it, but I’m excited about it.”

Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law and Heath Ledger in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Posted by GoreMaster Special Effects on August 12, 2009

Mark Gorelord – GoreMaster News

Still without a release date in North America, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus has its first international trailer. It’s described as a Adventure, Fantasy, Mystery movie. It’s a story about a traveling theater company that gives its audience much more than they were expecting. The movie marks the last screen role for Heath Ledger, who died during production, and it also features turns by Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law in Ledger’s stead.

The film is directed by Terry Gilliam and also stars Christopher Plummer, Tom Waits and Verne Troyer.

Trivia

•  Heath Ledger’s last movie project.
•  After the death of Heath Ledger, production was shut down for a few months. Then it was re-started when Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell agreed to complete Ledger’s role. The film’s fantasy premise, and some clever rewrites, let the actors play a man whose appearance changes as he travels between imaginary worlds.
•  The first film that Terry Gilliam storyboarded himself since The Adventures of Baron Munchausen.

Rob Marshall eyes ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’

Posted by GoreMaster Special Effects on July 31, 2009

Johnny Depp

Jay A. Fernandez and Borys Kit – HollywoodReporter.com

Are you ready to see Jack Sparrow swashbuckle his way through a big, flashy musical number?

Choreographer-turned-director Rob Marshall is in talks to take the wheel of the massive “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise from director Gore Verbinski. Disney and series producer Jerry Bruckheimer have been eager to set sail on a fourth installment with star Johnny Depp back in his bandanna as Sparrow as early as next year.

Verbinski, with scripts from Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, directed the first three films to $2.67 billion in worldwide grosses (the last, “At World’s End,” was released in 2007). When he exited the franchise in April, the studio immediately sought a fresh take to continue the pirate voyage on a potentially smaller scale. (The last two pictures cost north of $400 million, together.)

Marshall, who is finishing up the Weinstein Co. musical “Nine” for a November release, is not an obvious choice for a loud action-and-mayhem tentpole. But presumably, if he can corral the singing, acting and dancing talents of Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Sophia Loren and Stacy Ferguson, he can handle cannon battles, funny monkeys and angry natives.

The CAA-repped Marshall has directed the films “Memoirs of a Geisha” and “Chicago,” which won six Oscars, including best picture, in 2002.

Depp’s next role unclear as green lights delayed

Posted by GoreMaster Special Effects on July 22, 2009

johnny-depp

Steven Zeitchik and Borys Kit – Hollywood Reporter

Johnny Depp is coming off an acclaimed role in “Public Enemies” and stars in one of the most anticipated movies of this weekend’s Comic-Con, “Alice in Wonderland.”

But the Mad Hatter is facing an unusual situation: Like the character he plays in “Alice,” he soon could be killing time.

Depp is attached to a number of high-profile development properties but is facing a landscape devoid of “go” pictures — those ready for production. Instead, there are a dizzying number of possibilities and schedule permutations, none of which seems likely to result in a produced movie for him anytime soon.

Producers have been interested in Depp for the title role in Warner Bros.’ “The Incredible Mr. Limpet.” Kevin Lima’s remake of the 1964 fantasy comedy that would continue a whimsical, if slightly less drama-intensive, streak for the actor. He has not signed on, however, and in any event the pic would not go into production until next year.

Meanwhile, the fourth installment of “Pirates of the Caribbean” remains a priority for Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. At an earlier point, it was going to be the next picture for Depp, who toplines as Jack Sparrow. But with Gore Verbinski no longer directing the franchise, the ship has slowed.

Disney is seeking a new director, a process that could take time. Although the studio is believed to want an established helmer of franchise and action fare, it has put the word out to agents that it would be open to younger directors and new ideas, potentially prolonging the process. That could mean as much as a four- or five-year hiatus since the 2007 release of the previous picture, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.”

(Disney also would like to scale back the size and budget of the next movie compared with previous installments; for that reason, it likely won’t bring back relatively pricey Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.)

Johnny Depp

Because of the “Pirates” lag, a Depp project that was supposed to go into production after the Sparrow-fest, “The Lone Ranger,” could end up getting pushed back further, though there’s also a possibility it could shoot ahead of the nautical tale.

For the moment, though, “Ranger” also remains locked in the stable. “Pirates” writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio have written a script for the Disney/Bruckheimer update, but the studio could wind up commissioning a polish or another draft. There’s also no director, and Depp is attached to play Tonto, with the title role still to be cast.

Finally, Warners’ feature update of the ghoulish TV series “Dark Shadows” — a Depp/Tim Burton collaboration that might have shot later this year or early next year — also might be back-burnered. Burton still has work to do on “Alice,” which opens in March, and tends to spend a lot of time on prep work.

What the possibilities boil down to, besides head spinning, is that there are projects with momentum that Depp has not signed for, and projects he has signed for that don’t have a lot of momentum.

GoreMaster Makeup Effects ManualIn other words, it’s a very 2009 phenomenon brought on by a star’s choosiness on the one hand and studios’ increasing caution on the other. (In what might be an emerging mini-trend, Will Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio happen to find themselves in similar situations.)

The result is that Depp could face a year or longer without appearing on the big screen.

That might not sound like a major departure, but for moviegoers, it will seem like a shift. Depp has been in one of the most fertile periods of his career: The actor also stars in the Hunter S. Thompson adaptation “The Rum Diary” and had a supporting role in Terry Gilliam’s “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” which hasn’t yet been released in the U.S. In the past nine years, Depp has not had more than two movies come out in any 18-month period; if “Imaginarium” gets a release by the end of 2010, he’ll have had four.

Then again, the absence of a new role might mean a respite from his breakneck schedule. Even a pirate needs some time off.

Johnny Depp’s vampire meditation

Posted by GoreMaster Special Effects on July 19, 2009

Source: bang showbizJohnny Depp

‘Public Enemies’ actor Johnny Depp has devoted a room in his UK home to vampire memorabilia.

Johnny Depp meditates in a room full of vampire memorabilia.

The ‘Public Enemies’ actor is fascinated by the mythical blood-sucking creatures, and has a space in his London home full of items relating to them.

A source explained to National Enquirer magazine: “Johnny has a whole room devoted to vampires. He’s fascinated by them.

“Johnny uses the room to relax, meditate and be alone.”

Among the items in the space are masks, capes, posters, fangs and a rare copy of Bram Stoker’s novel ‘Dracula’.

Johnny, 46, has previously admitted he is fascinated by vampires, claiming he found 60s supernatural show ‘Dark Shadows’ enthralling.

He said: “Barnabas Collins from ‘Dark Shadows’ was a huge obsession of mine. I loved Barnabas Collins more than I loved the Harlem Globetrotters.

“I wanted to be Barnabas Collins so much that I found a ring, it was probably one of my mother’s rings, and I wore it on this finger, and I tried to comb my hair like Barnabas Collins, and I was trying to figure out how I could get fangs. It really had a heavy impact on me, a heavy influence on me.”
