Bigfoot coming to Portland, Maine

International Cryptozoology Museum

BY TOM BELL – Kennebec Journal

PORTLAND — Bigfoot is coming to Congress Street.

Loren Coleman, an expert on creatures that exist at least in the imagination, but have yet to be documented by scientists, is about to open the International Cryptozoology Museum, the only one of its kind in the world.

Coleman will rent a U-Haul van and move his 8-foot-tall, 400-pound Bigfoot sculpture, which now stands on the front porch of his home on Massachusetts Avenue in Portland, to a storefront window at 661 Congress St.

The museum, opening on Nov. 1, will feature fake artifacts, such as full-body mounted jackalopes and “cryptids,” creatures whose existence has been suggested but lacks scientific support.

Coleman owns a model of the Loch Ness monster that was made from descriptions of those who claim to have seen the creature, and he says he has a foot cast and hair sample from the Abominable Snowman, both found during a 1959 expedition in the Himalayas.

One of the most curious artifacts will be Coleman himself.

Coleman is considered a leading expert in the field of cryptozoology, which refers to the search for animals that are considered legendary or otherwise nonexistent by mainstream biologists.

Three years ago, when an ugly creature that became known as the “Maine Mutant” was found dead in Turner, it was Coleman who rushed to the scene and announced to the world that the creature was just a dog, which DNA results later confirmed.

Coleman has written 17 books on cryptozoology and has been an on- and off-camera consultant to NBC-TV’s “Unsolved Mysteries,” A&E’s “Ancient Mysteries” and the History Channel’s “In Search of History.”

For the past six years, he has housed his International Cryptozoology Museum in his home, open to the public by appointment.

Coleman, 62, said he has been getting e-mails from cryptozoology fans all across the country, as well as in Europe and Asia.

“Portland is going to be the epicenter of the world of cryptozoology now,” he said.

The museum will open in what is becoming Portland’s funky business district.

Strange Maine, at 578 Congress St., is a performance space and shop that caters to “freaks” and “weirdos,” according to its own Web site.

The Fun Box Monster Emporium, at 696 Congress St., sells stuff such as vintage Snork figures, kung fu posters and Shogun Warriors toys.

Coleman’s museum will be in the rear of a new bookstore called the Green Hand, which will specialize in supernatural fiction, horror fiction and weird fiction.

The stretch of Congress Street between Park and State streets has been like a Devil’s Triangle for new ventures because so many have come and gone over the years, said Nancy Grayson, owner of Cunningham Books at 188 State St.

She said she hopes the Green Hand and the International Cryptozoology Museum will change the pattern.

“Nothing has worked in those two blocks,” she said. “If they can get something going that is positive, that is great.”

Mike Discatio, co-owner of Joe’s Smoke Shop, said Bigfoot will feel right at home in the neighborhood.

“I’ve seen it all here,” he said. “Nothing fazes me anymore.”

‘Evil powers created half-man, half-goat creature’

Posted by GoreMaster Special Effects on September 28, 2009

The bizarre creature features a large human-like head with the legs and body of a goat.

The bizarre creature features a large human-like head with the legs and body of a goat.

The Daily Telegraph

An African village is reportedly shell-shocked after the birth of a bizarre faun-like creature said to have the combined features of a man and a goat.

Bild reports the creature, which died just a few hours after birth in Lower Gweru, Zimbabwe, had a huge head and face which resembled a human, as well as goat legs and a tail.

Villagers said the end product was so scary even dogs were afraid to go close to it. They burned the corpse fearing it was an evil sign.

“This is indeed a miracle that has never been witnessed anywhere,” elder Themba Moyo said.

The goat’s owner called police after the birth.

“It’s the first time that my goat did this. I have 15 goats and it’s this goat that gave me birth to most of them. My goats often give birth to sets of twins,” he said.

The Zimbabwe Guardian reports that Midlands Governor and Resident Minister Jason Machaya is adamant the creature is the result of a coupling between man and goat.

“This incident is very shocking. It is my first time to see such an evil thing. It is really embarrassing,” he reportedly said.

“The head belongs to a man while the body is that of a goat. This is evident that an adult human being was responsible. Evil powers caused this person to lose self control.

“We often hear cases of human beings who commit bestiality but this is the first time for such an act to produce a product with human features.”

A vet didn’t have the chance to investigate the creature, but after inspecting photos, he told Bild he believed it was a child suffering from hydrocephalus, or water on the brain.

“The condition would have accounted for the abnormally large skull and for the chin, nose, ears and other body parts having shifted during development,” he reportedly said.

Half-man, half-goat creatures like fauns and satyrs are popular in Greek and Roman mythology.

Predators Looks To Hawaii

Posted by GoreMaster Special Effects on August 30, 2009

'Predators' Director Nimród Antal

'Predators' Director Nimród Antal

By Dave Gonzales – LatinoReview.com

When it was announced that Robert Rodriguez and his Troublemaker Studios were going to be inheriting the Predator franchise, news was that Rodriguez would keep the production mainly in Austin, Texas and ship in his actors and creature effects.

But, like Danny Glover will tell you: a Predator movie should really have a jungle in it. Just for good measure.

Which brings us to Tim Ryan and his Reel Hawaii report:

Scouts for 20th Century Fox’s $40-million creature feature are back on the Big Island for their third week of scouting Hawaii most of it where a lot of jungles have been looked at. The production would film for 18 days with an October start if the Hawaii portion is a go. That decision is expected to be made very soon…Some Hawaii production execs are being contacted about availability…

Predators will the the fifth film the creature has apperared in, the others being 1987′s Predator, 1990′s Predator 2 and the dismal Alien Vs. Predator movies, the second mostly dealing with the Predalien.

Predators will be directed by Nimród Antal and begins shooting on September 28th, a few weeks after Rodriguez and company wrap Machete, also in Austin. Predators tells the story of a group of people stranded on the Predator home world and the horrible surprises they find waiting there.

Burton’s Home Is A Mad Movie Museum

Posted by GoreMaster Special Effects on July 30, 2009

Tim Burton's Place

 From wenn.com

Moviemaker Tim Burton’s home has become a macabre tribute to his films, featuring furniture and puppets from his Goremaster Makeup Effects Manualsets.

The Corpse Bride director loves to take mementos home from all his films – and now he has a bizarre movie museum full of his own creations.

He tells WENN, “I’ve got so much c**p in the house. I got a really huge chair from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory which everybody loves sitting in because you feel like a little kid.

“I’ve got Corpse Bridge puppets, Nightmare Before Christmas puppets.”

But his collection of oddities isn’t limited to his own films: “This wax museum closed down and I bought the wax figure of Sammy Davis, Jr. I have it on the couch and one of the friends of my kids went crying to his mother, saying we had a dead person on our sofa!”

Tomoo Haraguchi Introduces You To His Miniatures and DEATH KAPPA!

Posted by GoreMaster Special Effects on July 28, 2009

Death KappaTodd Brown – TwitchFilm.net

Best known for their backing of extreme splatter films Machine Girl and Tokyo Gore Police Fever Dreams are about to dip their toes into another part of the Japanese cult film pool with Tomoo Haraguchi’s upcoming kaiju film Death Kappa.  And, yes, Haraguchi has turned everybody’s favorite friendly little turtle spirit into a fearsome giant killer.

Don’t know Haraguchi’s name?  You probably know his work.  The man has done effects work for the likes of Kore-Eda (Air Doll) and Tsukamoto (Bullet Ballet) while designing creature effects for high profile films like Ashura and Uzumaki and you want kaiju cred?  How about a bit of Gamera?  This man knows his stuff, no doubt about it.

And while Haraguchi is still relatively early in the production of his latest directorial effort he has already put together an introductory promo that showcases both the miniature sets that will be used as well as the creature itself.  And, yes, kaiju fans – this will be all old-school style: men in rubber suits and miniature buildings with not a digital effect to be found.

‘Wolfman’ Reshoots Equals New Creature Design

Posted by GoreMaster Special Effects on July 11, 2009

It is being reported by Baz Bamigboye at The Daily Mail that the The Wolfman has gone through a series of reshoots.

The reshoots on The Wolfman are said to have taken six weeks in total, with director Joe Jonhston (Captain America) being involved, but most of the work being done by legendary stuntman-turned-second unit director, Vic Armstrong (who did stunt work on such films as Raiders of the Lost Ark, Superman and the classic werewolf movie, An American Werewolf in London). Armstrong’s larger involvement in the reshoot is suppossedly because “Johnston has been back in LA for the past five weeks overseeing the special effects and computer-generated images.”

With the type of film The Wolfman is – with the effects needing to be just right to show off the titled creature in action – I’m not surprised if Johnston has kept his attention firmly on that aspect…

As part of the reshoots, Armstrong reportedly came up with a great confrontation scene between the Wolfman and the Werewolf (there’s a difference?): “They really go after each other and it’s dramatic and exciting, whereas the stuff they shot first time round was limp.” – Star Benicio Del Toro flew back to the UK to do the reshoots, and Emily Blunt is currently busy with Gulliver’s Travels so she could only dedicate “three or four weekends.” Anthony Hopkins for an unknown reason was unable to fly back to the UK, so he did his additional filming in LA instead. The Wolfman

Universal has officially confirmed that additional scenes were shot. Here’s a comment from the actual studio themselves about it:

“The full articulation of the transformational lead character will be realized when the film is completed and we are excited to share his incredible look with the world in the upcoming trailer.”

So, what does this news mean for the original Wolfman character design that was conceived by Rick Baker? A few months ago we got a look at some concept art that looked pretty bad ass as far as I could see (one of which is shown above). Perhaps it looked “daft” within the film’s gothic-styled setting, or didn’t look right during the action sequences.

Goremaster Makeup Effects ManualSome of you film buffs out there may already know that Rick Baker was responsible for the makeup effects in An American Werewolf London (that’s both the special effects makeup artist AND the stunt guy from that classic werewolf movie, also working on this one!). The effects Baker came up with are still jaw-dropping to witness even twenty-eight years later. Baker is still credited as the special makeup effects artist on The Wolfman, so here’s hoping he had a hand in this reported new design.

What do you think about The Wolfman reshoots and the news of a different creature design? How would you like the Wolfman to look?

The Wolfman stars Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt and Hugo Weaving, and is directed by Joe Johnston (The First Avenger: Captain America). It is slated for a release on November 6th, 2009.

Neville Page talks about his Star Trek Creatures

Posted by GoreMaster Special Effects on May 31, 2009

Big Red from Star Trek

Big Red from Star Trek

TrekWeb talks to Star Trek movie creature and character designer Neville Page about his work on the new movie, including the ice planet creature called “Big Red“.

1- So did you know from the start that you would be designing these two creatures on the Delta Vega Ice Planet? I understand it was originally supposed to be a desert planet, right?

JJ originally brought me on board to do the main “creature” that would chase Kirk. It was a desert planet and consequently, something more of a desert creature. For reasons unknown to me, it was switched to an ice planet. Obviously, any designs I had on this beast before were of no use.  So it was a complete redesign.  In fact, we were able to add an additional creature to this scene, the Polarilla. It was our red herring moment. You think that this is the one to be concerned about when, in fact…….

2- Tell us about Big Red (see image above), please. Did you get some feedback from fans on this creation?

Big Red was a real struggle because I was just not getting JJ the right feel with the first sketches. Usually, you never have the answer right away, but I was starting to get concerned when the ideas I was proposing just were not hitting the mark. Then, one evening, it just came together. I finally understood how to bring the desires of JJ, what the writers conceived, and my opinions into one frightening creature (at least I hope that happened).  JJ wanted to have this striking contrast of a Red creature on the white background of Delta Vega. I loved that image. He also wanted it to have eyes all over the place. He will tell you that I struggled with that one. I tend to, when possible, adhere to the sensibilities of nature, or at least use them as an inspiration. So, for me, the notion of so many eyes defied plausibility. But this is what I like the most, a challenge that I truly struggle with. How can I reconcile this crazy idea? And, you see, it is also my job….to take the desires of your “boss”, and help them realize it in a believable way.  It is hard to tell, but one way to get the eyes to be sprinkled throughout the body was to at least have them grade from sophisticated optics to simple sensory pits. It helped me give them a starting place and a stopping point as there were no true skeletal orbital cavities.

Big Red attacks Kirk
Big Red attacks Kirk

As for feedback….well…. Like anything, some people loved Big Red, some people hated it. A common complaint was the color red. It made no sense to some. Now, although JJ’s reason was, I would say, a visceral choice, the color red can be completely justified. I would agree that because it is an alien on an alien planet, that does not give you artistic license to do as you please. I firmly believe that to retain the suspension of disbelief, you still need to adhere to the laws of nature and physics. That being said, nature will surprise you at every turn with something that defies logic (our logic). So, with a little knowledge, you can do something a little different and either have the foresight that it would work “in nature” or have the research to have the cart lead the horse and backwards engineer a reason for a choice. In this case, Red can be easily justified. First off, there is much about this creature that you may not know. It is not really a land animal. It is sort of like a walrus in that, although possessing limbs that are capable of land mobility, the water is where it’s grace is showcased.  Same with Penguins. Big Red is adept in water. I actually designed it as a swimming animal more than a land animal with the point being that something this large on land, if it were a land dwelling animal, would have no trouble catching Kirk. So, we discussed making it a little awkward out of water (to give Kirk half a chance). The big spikes don’t make any sense for snow either. That is because, it is not meant for snow either. If anything, Big Red is more like a crab meets a Humbolt squid. With that, we have our justification for RED. A predatory animal of the deep that wants to go undetected may actually be red (like the Humbolt squid). Red has the longest wavelength of visible light and is the color that essentially goes black at depth (simplified quite a bit in description). A perfect color for a predator actually.

3- Describe working with J.J. Abrams.

He is such a pleasure. He knows what he wants and he warrants the respect, but all the while he keeps the environment pleasant. Furthermore, he surrounds himself with like minds and the consequence is being in an environment conducive to creativity.  What I also love about JJ is how he lets you contribute to the process. He would ask many of us our opinion about something well outside of our expertise. He is open to ideas outside of his own. There is confidence, but no arrogance.  And lastly, the man makes me laugh!! A lot!!!

4- What else did you work on this Star Trek movie ?

Once the 2 creatures were mostly completed, I then moved on to “Aliens”. Random stuff. A few foreground, some background. Barney Burman and his company Proteus, collaborated on these. We collectively did many designs for JJ’s perusal and then finally settled on a variety that Barney and crew fabricated. Those guys worked some crazy hours trying to pull off the impossible. As with many productions, this was a collaborative effort. I also worked with Joel Harlowe and team on the Romulans. Joel and I had a great time together developing the Romulan look. I was really pushing for tattoos though. Be careful what you wish for, as I ended up doing a few hundred tattoo designs in the end. The coordination of this race was impressive to witness. And I must make mention of Mindy Hall. She was the master and commander of all things makeup on this film. We each played our part, but she and her team had the eye on the big picture, and, as you can tell, this was a BIG picture!!

5- Finally, besides Tron, what are your future projects ?

Wrapping up little details on Tron. Also wrapping up details on Piranha 3 in 3D.  Currently doing some work on 20,000 Leagues under the Sea, Captain Nemo. Could not be happier than to be associated with this subject matter. And then there are the other secret projects.

I am also hopeful that JJ and team will call on me again for another round of TREK!!!
